Crowns

Damaged, decayed, or misshapen teeth can find new beauty and life with a dental crown. At Dr. Rao’s office, we want our patients to feel confident when showing off their pearly whites. For this reason, we usually place all-porcelain crowns on teeth that show when a person smiles. Back teeth may require a more durable restoration because of the intense pressure incurred during chewing. We offer porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-metal crowns for back teeth.

When is a Crown Needed?

Dental crowns fit over a prepared natural tooth. When a filling, onlay, or inlay isn’t sufficient to correct tooth decay, a crown is warranted. Often, decay develops beneath old fillings, and only a crown can restore function and strength. A deep crack or fracture may also call for a crown.

Crowns require two visits. At the first, Dr. Rao will prepare your tooth for the restoration and take an impression for our dental lab. You’ll wear a temporary crown while a lab technician fabricates the permanent restoration. At your second visit, the temporary will be replaced with the final crown.
